The Waiting for the Northern Lights retreat is a 2-night slow travel experience in autumn Lapland, designed for travellers who want to experience the northern lights in a calm and authentic way.
Many aurora tours promise a chase — driving long distances, searching for clear skies and waiting for something spectacular to appear. While this can sometimes work, it often turns the experience into a rush.
At Ranch Kuulas we practice something different.
We slow down.
The retreat takes place at a small Finnish horse ranch in the quiet countryside near Rovaniemi, far from busy tourist routes and city lights. Here, the nights are dark, the forests are silent and the sky feels close.
During your stay you will learn the basics of aurora observation, including how forecasts work, what affects visibility and how to read the northern sky. Instead of chasing the lights, we spend time outdoors, around the fire, allowing the experience to unfold naturally.
Days at the ranch are gentle and restorative. You will ride calm Finnhorses through the quiet autumn forest, relax in a traditional Finnish sauna and share dinners cooked together by the wood-fired oven in our historic log house.
Evenings are dedicated to the simple art of waiting: sitting by the fire, watching the stars and listening to the forest.
Sometimes the lights appear suddenly above the trees.
And sometimes they don’t.
Either way, the retreat offers something increasingly rare in modern travel — time, silence and connection with nature.

The Holiday of Your Dreams Awaits

The Ranch & Our Way of Working

About us
We are a small working ranch outside Rovaniemi, where we live and work with Finnhorses throughout the year. Our riding takes place on forest trails and open terrain shaped by the northern seasons, using Finland’s native horse breed known for its strength, steady temperament, and long history.
We guide our rides in small groups and match each horse carefully to the rider’s experience. Alongside riding, we prepare meals at Restaurant Loimu in a wood-fired oven and are opening farmhouse-style accommodation in summer 2026 for guests who want to stay longer in a quiet rural setting.
Responsibility
At Ranch Kuulas, responsibility is part of everyday life. We care for our horses, nature and surroundings with respect, following sustainable practices and traditional ways of working. Our goal is to create experiences that feel meaningful while preserving the environment for the future.
Our Horses
Our horses are at the heart of Ranch Kuulas. From Finnish Finnhorses to Arctic horses, each one is carefully trained and well cared for. Known for their calm temperament and strength, they make every riding experience safe, steady and deeply connected to nature.
