Planning a drive north from Rovaniemi to Saariselkä? The journey takes you through the landscapes of Finnish Lapland, past forests, open fells and small communities along the way. It is a beautiful route to explore at your own pace, and a good meal can turn a long drive into part of the holiday.

If you are looking for a lunch stop between Rovaniemi and Saariselkä, Ranch Kuulas offers something a little different from a quick roadside meal. Restaurant Loimu is a small, reservation-based restaurant at our family-run horse ranch, where lunch brings together local flavours, the warmth of a historic log house and a glimpse of everyday life with Finnhorses.

Enjoy a relaxed meal, ask for a Finnish berry wine or a local beer, and take a moment to slow down before continuing north. Because Loimu operates according to table reservations, please book your table through our reservation system before setting off.

A planned pause on your drive north

The route from Rovaniemi to Saariselkä follows the E75 north through Sodankylä. Saariselkä is around 260 kilometres from Rovaniemi, making a break along the way a welcome chance to stretch your legs, enjoy a proper meal and experience a little more of Lapland beyond the main resort areas. Ranch Kuulas is located north of Rovaniemi, about 50 kilometres from the city.

A visit to Loimu is best planned as part of your day rather than left to chance. We prepare and serve lunch for guests who have reserved a table, so please check the available times and book before arriving. The reservation calendar is the best place to see current availability. If you wanna do booking for today, let us know in whatsapp messages!

This way, you can plan your drive around a confirmed table. You can let us know about dietary requirements when you book, and we can prepare for your visit. It also means you will know whether your preferred day and time are available before you leave Rovaniemi.

If you are travelling with children, friends or family members who would like to see the horses, allow extra time for your stop. Lunch is a lovely reason to visit the ranch; the surrounding countryside and the horses give you a chance to experience a quieter side of Finnish Lapland, too.

Lunch in a historic log house

Restaurant Loimu is set inside a historic log building at Ranch Kuulas. The atmosphere is warm and unhurried: timber walls, a wood-fired oven and the smell of freshly baked bread make a welcoming contrast to the cold winter air outside.

We like food that feels connected to the place it comes from. Lapland’s food culture is shaped by the seasons, the forests, lakes and farms, and by the practical traditions of life in the North. At Loimu, we bring that spirit to the table with comforting dishes and local ingredients.

The restaurant is small, which is part of the experience. Rather than a busy dining room, Loimu offers a more personal setting where you can settle in, enjoy your meal and ask about the food, the house or life at a working horse ranch. It is a place to pause in the middle of a travel day, not just order something quickly and head straight back to the car.

Our lunch service is based on table reservations. We do not plan each day around walk-in traffic; we prepare according to the bookings we have received. Reserving ahead helps us welcome you properly and prepare for your group.

Local food with a Lapland connection

A road trip is a chance to discover more than the scenery outside the car window. It can also be a chance to taste the region you are travelling through.

Lapland’s food traditions include warming soups, root vegetables, fish, berries and reindeer. Menus and ingredients vary with the season and what is available, but the aim is always the same: food that feels generous, familiar and suited to the northern climate.

At Loimu, the meal is served in the setting of a real family-run ranch. You are not stopping at a restaurant in the middle of a city centre. You are visiting a small countryside business where horses are part of everyday life, and where the surrounding landscape is part of the experience.

You do not need to be a rider to enjoy a visit. Some guests come for an activity; others simply want a good local lunch and a chance to see the ranch. If you are curious about the horses, you can ask us what is possible during your visit. Any extra activity should be agreed in advance so that we can plan it around the day’s schedule and the horses’ needs.

Add Finnish berry wine or a local beer

A good drink can bring another local note to lunch. At Loimu, you can ask about Finnish berry wines and local beers to enjoy with your meal.

Finnish berry wines offer a different taste of the North. Depending on the wine, berries can bring a fresh, tart, floral or gently sweet note to the glass. A berry wine can be an interesting choice alongside a savoury lunch or as a small taste of Finnish ingredients you may not encounter at home.

Local beers offer another way to explore Finnish flavours. A crisp lager, a malty ale or a seasonal brew can pair well with a hearty meal and freshly baked bread. Ask us what is currently available, as the selection may vary.

If you prefer not to drink alcohol, you can still enjoy the warmth of a proper lunch stop. Ask about the non-alcoholic drinks available on the day.

Please remember that the drink selection is subject to availability. If you have a particular preference, you can mention it when making your reservation or contact us before your visit.

A gentle break from the road

Driving through Lapland in winter is beautiful, but road conditions and daylight can change quickly. A planned lunch stop gives you time to rest, warm up and enjoy a slower moment before carrying on.

At Ranch Kuulas, the transition from road to ranch is simple: arrive for your reserved time, come inside and settle in for lunch. If you are travelling during the darker months, the warm atmosphere of the log house and the wood-fired oven offers a welcome contrast to the snowy landscape outside.

The meal can also be a good moment to talk through the rest of your route. Are you heading to Saariselkä for skiing or a winter holiday? Continuing to Ivalo or Inari? Making several stops along the E75? A lunch break at the ranch gives you a chance to pause between destinations and enjoy a more personal view of Lapland.

If you have a tight driving schedule, check the duration shown in the booking system and allow enough time for the full visit, including getting to and from the ranch. If you would also like to meet the horses or add an activity, please contact us ahead of time so we can tell you what can fit into your day.

A stop for people who are not riding

Many visitors to Lapland want to experience horses but do not necessarily want to ride. They may be travelling with a rider, have limited time, or simply prefer to enjoy the scenery and the food. Loimu is a good choice for those guests, too.

You can visit the ranch for lunch without booking a riding activity. If you would like to see the horses, tell us when you book. We can let you know what might be possible during your visit, depending on the day’s schedule and the horses’ routines.

The horses at Ranch Kuulas are not props waiting for visitors. They live and work on the ranch, with their own routines and rest. We plan guest experiences around their wellbeing. That means the exact opportunity to meet them may vary, and we do not promise close contact unless it has been arranged in advance.

For families, this can be a lovely way to introduce children to the Finnish horse breed and rural life in Lapland. For non-riding companions, it is an opportunity to share the day with the rider in your group and enjoy the ranch in your own way.

Make it part of a bigger Lapland experience

If you have more time than a lunch break, you can combine your visit with one of the ranch’s winter activities. Depending on the season, weather and availability, options may include a Finnhorse sleigh ride, a winter horseback experience or time at the ranch with the horses.

A meal after time outdoors is a natural fit. You can warm up inside, enjoy the food and talk about the landscape you have just experienced. For visitors who want to make a day of it, ask us about combining lunch with an activity and, where available, a transfer.

If you are staying in Rovaniemi and do not have a rental car, contact us before booking. Transfer availability depends on the day and arrangements, so please do not assume that a ride is included in a lunch reservation. We can confirm what is possible for your date.

For travellers driving north, Loimu works well as a planned stop before continuing to Saariselkä. For guests returning south, it can be a relaxing meal before the final stretch back to Rovaniemi. Either way, booking ahead is essential because we operate our lunch service according to table reservations.
