When people plan a trip to Lapland, they often start with the big experiences: the Northern Lights, snowy forests, reindeer, huskies and the Arctic Circle. But one of the best ways to get to know a place can be much quieter. Sit down for a meal, taste something made with local ingredients and hear a little about the life and traditions behind the food.

At Ranch Kuulas, Restaurant Loimu brings together Finnish food, a historic log house and the everyday rhythm of a family-run horse ranch. We are about 35 minutes from Rovaniemi, surrounded by countryside and northern nature. Here, lunch is a chance to slow down, enjoy a warm meal and experience another side of Lapland.

Ask us about Finnish berry wines and local beers to pair with your food. Then take your time: the fire is warm, the house has a story of its own, and the Finnhorses are part of life at the ranch.

Loimu is a small restaurant, and we operate our lunch service based on table reservations. Please reserve your table through our Moder booking system before your visit.

A taste of Lapland, served at the ranch

Lapland’s food culture is shaped by the land and the seasons. It is a place where warming meals make sense after time outdoors, where berries are treasured, and where recipes have grown from practical ways of living in the North.

At Loimu, we want food to feel connected to the place where it is served. Our restaurant is part of Ranch Kuulas, a working Finnhorse ranch outside Rovaniemi. The landscape, the animals, the old log house and the food all belong to the same experience.

Our cooking is inspired by Finnish and northern traditions. Depending on the season and the menu, you may find comforting soups, reindeer, fish, root vegetables, berries and freshly baked bread. We value food that is generous and familiar, made with care and served in a setting that invites you to stay a little longer.

A meal here is not a performance or a large staged event. It is a chance to experience a small piece of rural Lapland: a historic house, the warmth of a wood-fired oven and the everyday life of a family business with horses.

Restaurant Loimu is inside a historic log house

The building that now houses Restaurant Loimu has had a life of its own. It originally served as a village bank in the 1910s. The logs were later reassembled at Ranch Kuulas, giving the building a new chapter in the countryside north of Rovaniemi.

Step inside and the atmosphere changes. Outside, Lapland can be cold, snowy and still. Inside, timber walls and the warmth of the wood-fired oven make the room feel welcoming. The building’s history is part of the experience, but it is not just something to look at. It is a place where people meet, eat and share stories.

The wood-fired oven is central to the feeling of Loimu. It brings warmth to the room and gives us a way to prepare food and bread in a setting that feels rooted in the house. The scent of freshly baked bread, a warm bowl of soup or a hearty main course can make a winter day feel especially good.

Loimu is intentionally small. That means a more personal atmosphere and a quieter meal than you might find in a busy city restaurant. It also means that we need to know when guests are coming. We prepare the service according to reservations, so your table should be booked before you arrive.

Finnish berry wine and local beer with lunch

A good drink can add another layer to a meal. At Loimu, you can ask about Finnish berry wines and local beers to enjoy with lunch.

Finnish berry wines are one of the country’s distinctive tastes. They offer something different from the grape wines many travellers already know. Depending on the berries and style, a berry wine can be tart and bright, gently sweet, fragrant or full of deep fruit flavours. It can be enjoyed with food or on its own as a taste of Finnish ingredients.

Local beer offers another way to explore the region through flavour. A well-chosen beer can sit comfortably alongside a hearty meal, a bowl of soup or freshly baked bread. If you are curious about what is made nearby, ask us what local options are currently available.

The selection can vary, so it is best to check with us if you have a particular drink in mind. If you prefer a non-alcoholic option, you can ask about those as well. The aim is to make lunch enjoyable for everyone at the table, whether you would like to try a berry wine, order a local beer or simply have a warm drink.

If you are travelling with a group, it helps to let us know in advance if you would like to order drinks alongside your meal. That gives us a better chance to prepare for your visit and answer questions about the available selection.

A meal that fits naturally into a Lapland day

A food experience near Rovaniemi can be a destination in itself or part of a fuller day outdoors. Loimu is at Ranch Kuulas, where visitors can also experience Finnhorses and winter activities. Some guests come to ride or take a sleigh ride and enjoy lunch afterwards. Others come for the meal, the old house or the chance to visit a working ranch.

You do not need to ride a horse to come for lunch. If you are travelling with someone who is riding, you can join them for the meal and enjoy the ranch at your own pace. If you would like to meet the horses, please mention that when you make your reservation or contact us beforehand. We can tell you what may be possible on the day.

The horses have their own routines, and their wellbeing comes first. The chance to see them may depend on what is happening at the ranch, the weather and the horses’ schedule. We do not want to promise an interaction that may not be suitable at the time, so arranging it ahead is the best way to plan.

For guests who want to make more of the visit, lunch can be combined with a suitable activity when available. In winter, a sleigh ride or horseback experience can make a memorable start to a meal in the warm log house. Please ask about the options for your date before booking, as activities depend on the season, weather and the horses’ workload.

A quieter alternative to the busiest places

Rovaniemi is a popular destination, especially during the winter months. Many visitors come for the Arctic Circle, Santa Claus Village and the major winter activities. Those experiences are part of what makes a trip to Lapland exciting, but there is also value in stepping away from the busiest places for a while.

Ranch Kuulas offers a more rural setting. You can enjoy a meal in a historic building, see the countryside around the ranch and experience a small family business where horses are part of everyday life. The visit is not about trying to fit as many attractions as possible into a day. It is about taking time for one meaningful stop.

That slower pace can be especially welcome during a winter holiday. After a morning outdoors, lunch gives you a chance to warm up and rest. If you are planning a day around several activities, it can be a calm moment between them. And if you have a free afternoon, it can be a lovely way to discover a different side of the region.

Loimu is around 35 minutes from Rovaniemi, so please allow enough time to travel to the ranch and enjoy your meal. If you are not driving, contact us before making plans to ask whether a transfer can be arranged for your date. Transport is not automatically included with a lunch reservation.

Local food near Rovaniemi for couples, families and small groups

Loimu is suited to travellers who want a relaxed meal in a personal setting. Couples can enjoy a peaceful lunch together. Families can take a break from a busy itinerary and experience the countryside. Small groups can share a meal and try Finnish flavours together.

If your group includes different interests, lunch can be an easy experience to enjoy together. One person may be keen on horses, while another prefers food, photography or a quiet visit. At Ranch Kuulas, the food experience does not require everyone to choose the same activity.

If you are celebrating a special occasion or travelling with a group, please contact us ahead of time. We can tell you what arrangements may be possible, explain the menu and help you plan a visit that fits your schedule.

For larger groups, advance planning is especially important. Loimu is a small restaurant, and we operate according to table reservations. A message ahead of time helps us check whether your preferred date and group size can be accommodated.

What makes a food experience feel local?

The word “local” can mean many things. It may refer to where ingredients are grown or made, the people who prepare the food, the traditions behind a recipe or the setting in which you enjoy it.

At Loimu, local character comes from the combination of these things. We serve food in a historic log house at a Finnish horse ranch. The dishes are inspired by northern and Finnish cooking. Our menu is planned with the season and available ingredients in mind, and the experience is connected to the everyday life of the ranch.

The setting matters, too. A meal in a log house surrounded by countryside feels different from dining in a city centre. You can look out at the northern landscape, notice the warmth of the wood-fired oven and learn about the Finnhorse, a native Finnish breed with a long history in the country.

You can also ask us about the building, the horses and the food. We are happy to share what we know, and we enjoy welcoming visitors who want to understand more than just what is on their plate.
